About the Museum Exhibitions
The Springfield Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, MA, is home to the country’s only permanent museum gallery devoted to the work of Currier & Ives. The Lenore B. and Sidney A. Alpert Gallery presents thematic exhibits drawn from the Museum’s collection of nearly 900 hand-colored lithographs by the famous “printmakers to the people.” The prints represent Currier & Ives’ most popular subjects, including important events in American history, scenes of rural America, the changing seasons, leisure pastimes such as hunting and yachting, portraits of famous personalities, westward expansion, and other quintessentially American images. A research center and comprehensive database are also available in the gallery and provide visitors with the opportunity to research prints from the collection not on view.
